HOME   WHAT   NEED   EXPECT

What to expect

Lastly, CIST1010 aims to teach you what to expect in your career.

There can be a lot of anxiety around this, so starting to get a better idea of what a job entails can really help!

Resource: TED: Nonlinear Career Paths

There was a lot of discussion about this topic in class, but for me, this video drove the point home the most.

Here's what you learn: careers are weird!

They can twist and turn and go in wildly different directions from what you expect, and that's ok!

We spend a lot of time on choosing a major, looking into jobs, picking a concentration, etc. etc. etc.

So, it can be hard to remember that none of this is final

Pivots are certainly possible—you're not stuck with your first choice!

Resource: Job Shadows!

Last but not least, the job shadows round everything off with some real-world experience.

Out of anything else, these can teach you what it's actually like to work in tech.

Try to make the most out of these!

Personally, I learned that there's a lot of flex in most work environments, more than I expected.

You may be assigned to one project or area, but often can go to other teams in the company to help or get help.

Real-world experience like that is incredibly valuable, and these will be some of your most important takeaways from CIST1010!
